How to Disconnect the Water Line to the Filter Housing on a Refrigerator

You can disconnect your refrigerator's water line.

There are different ways to disconnect the water line to the filter housing on a refrigerator. It will generally depend on the manufacturer of either the refrigerator or the filter, but do-it-yourself connections may be different from either of them. In all cases, filters are meant to be changed on a regular basis, so disconnecting a water line can be accomplished by anyone with do-it-yourself skills and basic tools.

Turn off the power to the refrigerator.

Turn off the water supply to the water line by turning off the saddle valve directly attached to a feed pipe, turning off a water valve that has been soldered into the water feed line or turning off the main water supply to the home.

Find the compression fitting that attaches the water filter to the water line. Attach one wrench to the filter side of the fitting. This wrench stabilizes the filter so that it doesn't move. Attach another wrench to the compression nut. Turn the compression nut while holding the filter wrench solidly in place until you are able to remove the fitting. Use a bucket to catch any dribbling water from the line.

Remove the quick-connect clips that attach the water line to the filter. These clips are connected with a button that is pushed down firmly. When the button is pushed, the water filter will slide out of the connection and a new one can be installed in its place.
